I think the 13 inch MBP has been the best valued computer Apple sells-I think they are the best in class- and is plenty powerful for PS and LR. The best but expensive way to speed throughput would be with an external USB C SSD-to my mind marginal bang for big bucks. I have done that for years with my aging 2014 13 inch MBP working on 24mp raw files although I only use PS. You would literally "see" a better return on investment purchasing a large retina resolution external graphics panel and calibrator. My plan was to attempt to run an external Graphics Card (GPU) via the Thunderbolt port of my MacBook Pro 13 (Retina, Late 2012) and see see if I could improve on the poor performance of the built-in Intel 4000 GPU (included in my Macbook Pros 2.5GHz i5 processor). I think it would not be worth the effort but I would be interested if it could be done. I would bet you would have to do that with what you propose to do. In order to use nVidia cards in Hackintoshes the configuration files have to be altered. For the price of the Akito and a GPU you could buy an i5 desktop with the same GPU.

Since reasonably priced Windows laptops are now available with nVidia GPUs that can game at 1080 I have no idea why anyone would buy an external GPU for what will doubtless be a suboptimal experience. I looked at the Akito specs and from what I see the intention is for use with Windows and only with specific machines. In the Hackintosh world where I have, ahem, dabbled one cannot simply plug an nVidia card into a machine without experiencing serious issues, aka kernel panic, because the operating system is not automatically keyed to recognize that device-Apple has not sold an nVidia gpu since maybe Core 2 duo days.
